Coming from a background of a love of fashion and inspirations from businessmen and the power held in their briefcases, Nicomede Talavera the now London-based designer at only 23 years old is making modern and smart designs before interning at Blaak Homme next year and continuing his studies at Central St Martins.

Dazed Digital: How old are you?
Nicomede Talavera: 23

DD: How long have you been designing?
Nicomede Talavera: Three years

DD: Where are you based?
Nicomede Talavera: West London

DD: How would you describe your own style?
Nicomede Talavera: I am really inspired by sportswear, its purpose and how it can strike in between practicality and beauty.

Recently I have been really inspired by nature and the world as we watch it rapidly evolve in front of us. I am also very into 'Britishness' and traditional shapes, techniques and fabrics and like to balance playfulness with functionality. Paying attention to detail through innovative designs.

DD: Who would you like to collaborate with?
Nicomede Talavera: I'd like to collaborate with somebody outside of fashion design, but still in the creative industry.

Say an illustrator, sculptor, artist, dancer etc, with whom I can create a whole new form of expression and creativity.

DD: Who do you have in mind when you design?
Nicomede Talavera: I usually begin each collection with a 'muse' who I keep in mind; but it's not just about their appearance that counts, it can include their mood, daily routine and emotions.

Although I always go back to the same question, 'Would I or my friends wear this?'. This could be seen as too practical a way of designing but I create clothes which I want people to wear not just once a year, but that can become favourite pieces which get worn again and again. A timeless piece which doesn't just fit into a flash-in-the-pan trend but can be appreciated for a lifetime.

DD: What inspires you at the moment?
Nicomede Talavera: Being resourceful and appreciating my surroundings.

As well as the beginning of man and going back to basics and essentials whilst exploring the mindset of 'men who wanted to be men'.

DD: Who are your favourite designers and why?
Nicomede Talavera: The one that I always come back to is Kim Jones, he enabled the sportswear aesthetic be appreciate by a whole new group of people with his modernist casual wear.

I am also interning with Blaak Homme at the moment and really love their relaxed mix of different fabrics, patterns and proportions, combined with the playful accessories. I might be bias but I have to admit there are alot of great CSM graduates whose work I admire!

DD: Were you interested in fashion while growing up?
Nicomede Talavera: I was always fascinated by image and glamour when growing up.

But where I lived it was very isolated; everybody was wearing branded clothing, following the trends rather than setting them and didn't necessarily appreciate the design side of fashion. But I always read magazines, when I was 15 and bought my first ID Magazine and also made constant visits to the V&A and Tate to surrounded myself with the other side of fashion.

DD: What are the difficulties faced being a designer today?
Nicomede Talavera: I think the high amount of graduates every year means that you have to put in a lot of hard work and endless hours.

You've got to really put your heart into everything to make it successful!

DD: If you weren't designing, what would you be doing?
Nicomede Talavera: When I was younger I really wanted to be a business man in marketing; wearing a Saville Row classic suit and carrying a Prada briefcase. But, I soon realised that it wasn't the paperwork and board meetings that I wanted to be part of but the fashion side instead.

I was inspired by the smartness, elegance and empowerment which tailoring could give a man.

DD: What are your plans for the future?
Nicomede Talavera: Over the next year I will be interning in London at Blaak Homme, New York and Paris, where I want to gain as much experience as possible from established designers. I'm also currently working on a smaller capsule collection for AW June will see me show my graduate collection and then I'd like to go onto my MA at Central St Martins.
